Ten Steps To Top Ranking Pages In Google

Back to part 1

Step 5: Use Keywords In Heading Tag

Keywords in the <H1> through <H6> tags are assigned more relevancy points by Google. For this reason, in the copy of your page, often as the first text appearing on the page, it is wise to include a sentence or list of keywords between the heading tags. Remember that the larger the number, the smaller the size of the font.

The HTML for a heading tag is:

<H1>Google Search Engine optimization</H1>

Step 6: Use Keywords In Bold

A small factor but it helps. Similar to Heading tag, if you emphasize in some words, your page is most probably related to these words.

Step 7: Make The First 25 Words On The Page Keyword-Rich

Google put extra weight on the first 25 words of copy on your page. Your first few sentences on the page should mention your targeted keyword phrases.

In fact, the very first words of the visible text should be your primary targeted keywords or keyword phrases. Make sure it makes sense to human visitors as well.

Step 8: Add Keywords In Anchor Text

Google assigns extra relevance to keywords found in hyperlinks.

Keywords in both outgoing and incoming links can be helpful. The links to this page could preferably look like this:

<A HREF="http://www.SingaporeWebHosting.com/support/google-optimization.shtml">Google Search Engine optimization</ A>

Step 9: Add Keywords In Image ALT Tags

A small factor that can help is the use of "ALT" tags. ALT tags describe graphics when they are not loaded for some reason or if the visitor has his browser's graphic option turned off. You can view these tags by hovering your mouse over a picture.

The ALT tag looks like this:

<IMG SRC="picture.gif" ALT="Keyword-rich description">

Step 10: Appropriate Keyword Density

Good likes pages that have a "fair" percentage of keywords. This factor is called Keyword Density - the ratio of keywords to all the words on your page. If you have 100 words on a page and 5 of them are "Google", then you have a keyword density of 5% for the word "Google" at this page.

Keyword density is one of the most important factors to determine page rankings. The logic is that, the more you mention something in a page the more likely this page is related to this subject.

Put your keywords in your page so that they are used on 3-10% of the page. You can analyze your keyword density at Keyword Density.

The way the keyword is placed should actually make grammatical sense and the repetition should be such that visitors do not feel that you have deliberately repeated a particular phrase throughout the page.

This is also important from the point of view of search engine optimization. Google may penalize your site for practicing "keyword stuffing", or "spamming" them. If it looks like you are trying to "trick" Google, then there is a chance you may get penalized by Google.

Summary

These are the basic steps to optimising your web pages for Google. This is, of course, a very oversimplified tutorial. Google looks at over 100 factors, but what we discussed here are some of the major items that Google analyses on web pages.

In order to rank high in Google, and other search engines, you need experience. There're lots of very subtle tips and techniques only well trained specialists would know. In fact, you can find the basics we discussed here freely available on the Internet if you dig deep, yet only 20 web sites can get the top 20 listing;-) because few marketers understand how to apply these techniques properly.

You also need to know the latest development in this field. Search engines keep changing their algorithms to serve their users better (and to keep us online marketers busy;-). For instance, Google is punishing over-optimised sites from May. It's very, very difficult to find the fine line between optimized and over-optimized - even for experienced search engine optimization experts.

Check out our SEO service if you want to rank high in Google and other search engines.
